Learning About Dr. Adina’s Lab

Claire Dworsky, Water Quality Project Winner

Today we drove to UC Santa Cruz to visit Dr. Adina’s lab. We brought a big cooler of all my frozen samples. I met the lab professionals and learned about reagents, and saw the instruments and machines used in testing my samples. I used a syringe with a filter to strain the particles out of some samples. We should see some results in the next few days that will tell us what nutrients are in the samples we tested. I love working in the lab.

Today I reached 100 samples!

Claire Dworsky, Water Quality Project Winner

Today Mr. Metzner, Dr. Adina and Lisa the camera-person came to my house! We went to a nearby grass field and took samples, then we went to a turf field and took samples. Finally they came to see me play in a soccer game. I scored the winning goal! And my teammates were really excited to help me reach my goal of 100 water samples. We took 110 samples just to be safe.

Looking at water samples with my new microscope

Claire Dworsky, Water Quality Project Winner

I looked through the microscope at crumb rubber and water samples from both turf and grass fields. I put a piece of rice next to the crumb rubber to compare them. Then, I looked at the turf water and saw crumb rubber and sand. I didn’t see anything moving around in the turf water compared to the Kezar Stadium grass field sample.

In that sample, I saw creatures moving around. It looked like they were eating everything around themselves. Many looked like see-through jellyfish with tentacles. Other ones looked like escargot (snails), but they were orange. We took a video of the creatures and my dad put it on YouTube.
